Adi Godrej (BIOGRAPHY)

Adi Godrej is the Chairman of the Godrej Group and several entities that are part of one of India’s leading conglomerates. These include
Indian companies like Godrej Industries, Godrej Consumer Products, Godrej Properties as well as international companies such as Keyline Brands UK and Rapidol South Africa. In his capacity as Chairman, he also presides over the Group’s joint ventures Godrej Sara Lee and Godrej Hershey. He is also the Chairman of The Board of Trustees of the Dadabhai Naoroji Memorial Prize Fund.

As a Director of numerous firms, including Godrej & Boyce, Godrej Agrovet, Godrej International and Godrej Global MidEast FZE he is responsible for shaping the long term strategy for these organizations and driving a focus on value creation.

The Godrej Group is one of the respected business houses of India. The group has diverse business interests ranging from engineering to personal care products. Companies operating under the Godrej Group are involved in a host of businesses-from locks and safes to typewriters and word processors, from refrigerators and furniture to machine tools and process equipment, from engineering workstations to cosmetics and detergents, from edible oils and chemicals to agro products. Godrej Group is also well-known for its philosophy and initiation of labour reforms.

The Godrej Group was established in 1897. Its founder, Ardeshir Godrej, was a staunch nationalist and believed that India cannot win freedom unless it is economically self-reliant. Beginning with security equipment and soaps, the group diversified into a wide variety of consumer goods and services.

Adi Godrej was born to mother Jai Godrej and father Burjorji Godrej on April3, 1942. His mother was a teacher in a Godrej school and his father was into the family business. For higher education, Adi Godrej shifted to the United States and finished his bachelor’s
degree and master’s degree in management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining the family business,

Adi Godrej is the Chairman of Godrej Group of companies and is a prominent business personality from Mumbai. It is largely because of the efforts of this man that the Godrej Company has gone through a major phase of makeover in terms of company strategies and internal structure. The result was that the status of Godrej Company was hauled up to the status of a world class name which markets the best of products.

In the initial days, the Godrej Company manufactured vegetable-based soaps and locks but now the Godrej products include a wide range of consumer products such as furnitures, locks, soaps, hair dye products, refrigerators and many other electrical products. Adi Godrej’s predecessors, Pirojsha Godrej and Ardeshir Godrej were the founder of the Godrej Company. One of the biggest achievements of the Godrej Company under Adi Godrej was that it proved to be a suitable alternative for certain products manufactured by foreign companies.

As a Director of numerous firms, including Godrej & Boyce, Godrej Agrovet, Godrej International and Godrej Global MidEast FZE he is responsible for shaping the long term strategy for these organizations and driving a focus on value creation.

Over the last five decades Adi has played an important role in the development of a variety of industries by leading key organizations of trade and commerce as the former Chairman and President of the Indian Soap & Toiletries Makers’ Association, the Central Organization for Oil Industry and Trade, the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India, the Compound Livestock Feeds Manufacturers’ Association, the Indo-American Society and as member of the Governing Board of the National Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry.

Adi has also participated actively in the field of management education as a former Chairman of the Governing Council of the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, as a former member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the MIT, Sloan School of Management and the Wharton Asian Executive Board. Adi is a member of Tau Beta Pi (The Engineering Honor Society) and also serves as a member of the Governing Board of the Indian School of Business.


For his contribution to Indian industry Adi has been the recipient of several awards and recognitions including the Rajiv Gandhi Award 2002.

Godrej Sara Lee: It is a joint venture between the Godrej Group and Sara Lee Corporation, USA. The company is the world’s largest manufacturer of home insecticides. Its brand HIT is very popular in India.

Godrej Efacec: The Company provides warehousing, automated storage and retrieval system solutions.

Godrej Properties and Investments Limited (G.P.I.L): Godrej Properties provides meticulously planned townships at affordable prices.

The Godrej Group also has overseas establishments in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Oman, and Sharjah.

The Godrej Group under the leadership of Adi Godrej is engaged in extensive benevolent activities like contribution to nature and wildlife. He has set up a business unit in the Vikhroli Township near Mumbai city. It includes a mangrove forest and a school. Adi Godrej is known to contribute handsomely to the Wildlife Fund of India.
